NZ Biodiversity Strategy

Translating between knowledge systems

This work supported the development of the NZ Biodiversity Strategy.

Starting by helping create a shared understanding of how mātauranga Māori and Western science could work together within the national framework.

Working alongside the Kāhui Māori, drawing was used to explore and communicate the relationship between mātauranga Māori and western science in the context of biodiversity in Aotearoa. Bringing those drawings back into the room gave the wider group a common reference point, helping people get on the same page and move the work forward together.

Making the
Strategy Clear

Working alongside policy makers, scientists, and researchers as part of the team, the strategy was drawn as it developed.

Drawing the system exposed gaps, tested ideas, and made decisions more explicit. Because you can’t draw ambiguity.

The work helped people align around a common picture of the future direction and the actions needed to get there.

If you have an idea you'd like to explore, I'd love to hear about it.
