The first is a visualisation of the model showing the kaupapa Māori values that drive it and the outcomes that it produces. The focus was on the right to seek safety. I used illustration to capture the complex emotions a refugee may face when faced with the decision to leave their home, not knowing where they may end up or if they will be safe. The wairua and magic of the hui was so beautiful and integral to the important work of the kaimahi so I wanted to bring that through using handpainted textures and devices, quotes and illustrations. The art concept and style was developed specifically for this kaupapa with the participants, the illustration is scraped out of the dark brown whenua, linking back to te ira tangata, kura waka and the process of birth, the glowing images reminding us of moving from dark of the womb into the world of light. The illustrations were created live at the hui with Megan Salole as part my work with The League of Live Illustrators.
